How to Write the Cover Letter: An Active Writing Workshop at the TU Berlin
9:30 - 13:30, Nov. 10th, 2021 (Online)
(See below for other TU workshops!) In this workshop, open to students at the TU Berlin, we’ll go over how to write the perfect cover letter. You might ask, “Do I even need a cover letter?” The answer is usually yes! If written well, your cover letter can make a difference and might be the extra push that moves your application from the not-quite-sure pile into the interview-candidate pile. During the course of this active hands-on workshop, each participant will have the opportunity to write their cover letter and to get feedback from the instructor and their peers in a guided approach to crafting a convincing application.
First, we’ll discuss the structure and layout of the letter. We’ll go over what goes in, what won’t work, and where each element of the letter belongs on the page. We’ll also discuss how to make sure that the letter tells a strong visual story. Then we’ll explore the content of the letter, and how we can use the letter to convince employers that we’ve read their job posting and are highly qualified and motivated. We’ll go over how to present our hard skills, knowledge, soft skills, and personal traits for the German job market, how to highlight successes, and how and when to address anything else that we might want employers to know, including language skills, gaps in our resumes, or an unusual career path.
This workshop is hands-on and will require full active participation (it won’t be possible to participate as a passive listener). We’ll have active group activities as well as peer coaching and individual writing phases.
